What Happens After We Leave Site

There is a moment every client experiences at the end of a build. The last tradesperson leaves. The dust settles. The house is quiet in a way it hasn't been for months.

And then, almost always, something appears.

A door that catches slightly. A tile grout line that needs attention. A small detail that was missed in the final push to completion. It is rarely significant. But it is always there.

This is snagging. And how a contractor handles it - or doesn't - tells you more about them than anything that happened during the build itself.

The Industry Standard

In residential construction, the end of a project is often the end of the relationship. The final invoice is raised, the keys are handed over and the contractor moves on to the next job. If something needs attention afterwards, the client is left to chase.

Sometimes they get a response. Sometimes they don't.

This is not exceptional - it is standard practice across much of the industry. And it is one of the reasons that five-star reviews in construction are rarer than they should be. The build might have been excellent. The aftercare was not.

How We Approach It

Before we leave any project, we carry out a thorough snagging inspection alongside the client. Not a walkthrough. A proper, room-by-room review where every detail is checked, noted and signed off.

Anything that does not meet the standard we set at the beginning of the project is logged and resolved before we consider the job complete. This is not a courtesy - it is part of the programme. It is built into how we plan and deliver every project from the outset.

The Weeks That Follow

A build settles. Materials adjust to temperature and humidity. Paint that looked perfect on completion can show hairline movement as a property breathes through its first weeks of being lived in again.

This is normal. It is not a defect. But it is something we stay accountable for.

Every SOHO client has direct access to our team in the weeks following handover. If something needs attention - however minor, we respond. Not eventually. Promptly.

That commitment costs us time. It also costs us nothing compared to the alternative - a client who feels abandoned the moment the scaffolding comes down.

Why It Matters Beyond the Obvious

Aftercare is not just about fixing things. It is about trust.

A client who knows that SOHO will pick up the phone after completion is a client who refers us to their friends, their neighbours and their colleagues planning similar projects. Every referral we have received - and referrals are how the majority of our work comes to us - has come from a client who felt looked after throughout, not just during the build.

The post-completion period is not separate from the project. It is the final chapter of it. And like every other chapter, it reflects the standard we committed to at the beginning.

What We Ask of Ourselves

The question we ask at the end of every project is straightforward - would this client build with us again?

If the answer is yes, we have done our job. If it is not, no amount of quality during the build compensates for what was missing at the end.

That is the standard we hold ourselves to. Not just on site. But after we leave it.
